How to Change an Email Password in DirectAdmin

If you have forgotten your email password or want to improve your mailbox security, you can change your email password quickly using DirectAdmin.

This guide explains how to update the password for an existing email account.


Before You Start

Before changing your email password, make sure:

  • You can log into DirectAdmin
  • The email account already exists
  • You know which mailbox password you want to change

Important Information

After changing your password, you will also need to update the password on:

  • Outlook
  • Mobile phones
  • Tablets
  • Mail applications
  • Any devices using the mailbox

If you do not update your devices, the mailbox may stop sending or receiving email.


How to Change an Email Password

Step 1 — Log Into DirectAdmin

Open your browser and visit:  https://cp.yourdomain.co.za   (Replace yourdomain.co.za with your own domain name)

Enter your hosting username and password.


Step 2 — Open E-Mail Manager

From the DirectAdmin dashboard:

Click:  E-Mail Manager

Then click:  E-Mail Accounts


Step 3 — Locate the Email Account

Select the correct domain from the domain selector on the top right of the window.

Find the email address you want to update.

Example:  info@yourdomain.co.za

 

Step 4 — Open the Password Settings

Click:  ... (three dots) on the right side of the email account

Click: Change Password/username


Step 5 — Enter a New Password

Type your new mailbox password.

We recommend using:

  • Uppercase letters
  • Lowercase letters
  • Numbers
  • Symbols

Avoid:

  • simple words
  • birthdays
  • company names
  • reused passwords

You can also use the password generator if available.


Step 6 — Save the Password

Click:  Save

to apply the new password.

Your mailbox password is now updated.


Update Your Devices

After changing the password, update the mailbox settings on all devices using the account.

Common devices and applications include:

  • Outlook
  • Samsung Email
  • Gmail App
  • Apple Mail
  • iPhone/iPad
  • Thunderbird

  • Port: 993
  • SSL/TLS enabled

POP3

  • Port: 995
  • SSL/TLS enabled

SMTP

  • Port: 465
  • SSL/TLS enabled

Troubleshooting

Email Stops Working After Password Change

Usually this happens because one or more devices still use the old password.

Update the password on:

  • phones
  • tablets
  • Outlook
  • laptops
  • desktop computers

Authentication Failed Errors

Check:

  • password spelling
  • Caps Lock
  • full email address used as username

Example username:

Account Keeps Asking for Password

This is usually caused by:

  • incorrect saved password
  • outdated mail settings
  • SMTP authentication problems

Remove and re-enter the password carefully.
